FC Kohli, Full name Fakir Chand Kohli. Once there was a desire to join the Indian Navy. But there was also a desire to study abroad. Applied for a scholarship and was so brilliant that he got a scholarship from Queen’s University, Canada. Went to Canada and completed electrical engineering in the year 1948. After completing his studies, he started working at the Canadian Electrical Engineering Company.

He worked for about a year and then took another big jump in higher education. Received MS degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA in the year 1950. In the year 1951, he returned home after taking electrical system operation and other technical training abroad. Many years of hard work here made him the grandfather of the IT industry.

FC Kohli was born on 28 February 1924 in Peshawar (now Pakistan), undivided by India. His early education took place in Peshawar only. After this, he completed his graduation in Science from Lahore. While pursuing further studies abroad, he prepared himself for the future.

This company was started in 1968 by JRD Tata. Then Fakir Chand Kohli was the director of Tata Electric Company. In the year 1969, he was made the General Manager of TCS. After some time Kohli became the CEO of TCS.

In the year 1980, TCS established the Tata Research Development and Design Center in Pune, the country’s first software research and development center. In the year 1993, Tata partnered with the Canadian software Company, Integrity Software Corp 1993, which was later acquired by TCS. FC Kohli’s tenure also saw a lot of change in TCS. S Ramadurai, the former CEO and MD of TCS has written about the contribution of FC Kohli in his book ‘The TCS Story and Beyond’. In 2002, Kohli was awarded the ‘Padma Bhushan’, one of the country’s highest civilian honors. His son Sanjeev Kohli is also a software expert.
