T.V. Sundaram Iyengar started the first bus service to Madurai in 1911 and started a company in the transportation business by the name of South Roadways TVS with a large fleet of trucks and buses. Established. In 1979, Sundaram-Clayton Limited, a TVS group company, started a moped division at Hosur to manufacture TVS 50 mopeds. In 1980, TVS 50, India’s first two-seater moped, was launched from the factory in Hosur, South India, Tamil Nadu. Technical support with Japanese auto giant Suzuki Limited MEI resulted in a joint venture in 2017 between Sundaram Clayton Limited and Suzuki Motor Corporation. The commercial production of motorcycles began in 2018.
Recent Events and Achievements
In early 2015, TVS Racing became the first Indian factory team to participate in the Dakar Rally, the longest and most dangerous rally in the world. TVS Racing partnered with French motorcycle manufacturer Sherco and named the team Sherco TVS Rally Factory Team. TVS Racing also won the Red Day Himalaya and Fox Hill Super Cross held in Sri Lanka. In the three decades of its racing history, TVS Racing has won over 90% of the races.

In 2016, TVS began manufacturing the BMW G3 RR, which was co-developed in April 2013 after a strategic partnership with BMW Motorrad. In December 2018, the Hosur plant, where the motorcycle is manufactured, produced its 50,000th G310R series unit. On 6 December 2017, TVS launched its most awaited motorcycle, the Apache RR 310, at an event in Chennai. A 310cc motorcycle with a BMW co-developed engine, TVS features a first-on-bike full fairing, dual-channel ABS, EFI, KYB suspension kit, and so on. It is expected to compete with bikes like KTM RC 390, and Kawasaki Ninja. After hitting the market, there are 250SL, Bajaj Pulsar, and Dominar and Honda CBR 250R. The Apache RR 310 has been completely designed and implemented in India.
Norton Motorcycles acquired
On 17 April 2020, it is reported that TVS Motor Company has taken over Norton Motorcycle Company in an all-cash deal. In the short term, they will continue to produce motorcycles at Donington Park using the same workforce. TVS acquired Norton Motorcycles for Rs 153.12 crore.
For this deal, a new company called Project 303 Bidco Ltd was incorporated and then acquired by the Singapore subsidiary of TVS Motor for £1. Subsequently, the subsidiary signed a purchase agreement to acquire certain assets, including Norton and other related brands. TVS said in a stock exchange filing that the transaction would not be treated as a related party transaction.
