Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 28 December 1933 in Junagadh (now in the state of Gujarat, India) in a very simple family. Hirachand Govardhandas Ambani and Jamnaben Ambani had three sons and two daughters, of which Dhirubhai Ambani was his second son. His father Hirachand Govardhandas Ambani was a teacher at a school.
The family was going through a financial crisis, so Dhirubhai Ambani completed only high school and after that, he started doing odd jobs. Although, his small work was not making any difference in the condition of the family, who knew that a huge success was waiting for him.
Dhirubhai Ambani’s Struggle Life
His merchant intelligence was sharp from childhood, he bought a tin of groundnut oil from a wholesaler and sold the oil in roadside retail. He earned a few rupees as profit from this transaction. He used to do some work even when the school was on summer vacation. Many times he also used to sell Bhajiya at the fair. According to R-ADAG, in 1949 when Dhirubhai Ambani was 16 years old, in search of a job, he reached Aden city of Yemen by a ship called Kabota where his elder brother Ramniklal was already ‘A. Bessie & Company’. His elder brother Ramaniklal also got him and he started work with the company at a petrol pump at a salary of Rs.300 per month. After two years A. When Bessie & Company became the distributor of the company’s products called Shell, Dhirubhai Ambani was made the manager of the company’s filling station at the port of Aden. He had to do something big, and with this dream, he came back to India. After about 1 year, he came to Mumbai with only 500 rupees in his pocket and a lot of courage to fulfill his dream.
A lot of struggle and lack of capital also did not allow Dhirubhai Ambani’s intentions to melt and he made the outline of Reliance Commerce Corporation with a small room, a table, three chairs, a telephone, and only two associates.
At that time, the highest demand was for polyester in India and spices from India abroad. His company used to send spices from India and get polyester yarn from there. He went ahead with this work with new thinking and confidence. Entered the business of making clothes in 1966 and started a textile mill in Ahmedabad, Naroda. He started the Vimal brand which was named after his elder brother Ramniklal Ambani’s son, Vimal Ambani.
In 1992, Reliance became the first company in the country to raise funds from the global market. Around 2000, Reliance entered the petrochemical and telecom sector and Dhirubhai Ambani emerged as the richest person in the country on 6 July 2002, Dhirubhai Ambani left his memories.
