History of Mahindra & Mahindra Group
The story of M&M Group begins in 1892. Jagdish Chandra Mahindra was born this year. And two years later i.e. in 1894, Kailash Chandra Mahindra was born. Jagdish and Kailash Mahindra were a total of 9 siblings. Both brothers lost their father’s shadow at a very young age. After the father left, the responsibility of the mother and 8 siblings fell on the shoulders of Jagdish Chandra Mahindra.
Jagdish Mahindra may have been young, but his spirits were high and his thinking was visionary. He had well understood the importance of education even in that period. This was the reason why he tried his best to provide higher education for himself as well as his siblings. He sent his younger brother Kailash Chandra Mahindra to Cambridge to study.
How Mahindra and Muhammad was Created
After completing his studies, Kailash Chandra did a job in America. After this, in 1942, he was appointed the head of the Indian Purchase Mission in America. When Kailash Chandra returned to India in 1945, he was offered high government positions as well as large positions in several private organizations but decided to start his new business with his elder brother Jagdish Chandra Mahindra and friend Malik Ghulam Muhammad. In this way, these three together laid the foundation of the Mahindra & Muhammad Company in 1945.
Mahindra & Mahindra is known for its powerful vehicles today but it started as a steel company. The Mahindra brothers had thought that together with Malik Ghulam Muhammad, they would make M&M the best steel company in the country, but their dream suffered a major setback after the partition of the country.
Effects on Company by Partition in 1947
With the partition of the country on August 15, 1947, a big problem arose in front of the Mahindra brothers. Here the country was divided into two parts on the basis of religion and on the other hand, the Hindu-Muslim friends of the Company were divided. With the formation of Pakistan, Malik Ghulam Muhammad decided to go to Pakistan. He now wanted to part with M&M’s. Both brothers did not lose courage even in difficult circumstances.
Eventually, Malik left India and moved to Pakistan to become its first finance minister and then its third governor-general. Here the Mahindra brothers had to face a lot of trouble due to Malik’s departure. The reason for this was that Malik’s stake in the M&M company was very high. For some time it seemed that the Mahindra brothers would not be able to run the company without Malik and would shut it down, but this did not happen. Both took courage and decided to take the company forward. This is how Mahindra & Mohammed became Mahindra & Mahindra.
After the separation of Malik Ghulam Mohammed, the Mahindra brothers decided to change the name of the company but the problem was that the company was already registered under the name of M&M. There was no problem in changing the name but the stationery of the company was going waste. The company only wanted the name M&M. In such a situation, the name of the company was changed to Mahindra instead of Mohammed and the name of the company was changed from Mahindra & Mohammed to Mahindra & Mahindra. Mahindra Bhai now wanted to do something new with this company. In such a situation, Kailash Chandra Mahindra’s foreign experience came in handy.
